Don’t let diabetes get a leg up: Warning signs in diabetic foot & steps for prevention
InfographicBy: Fatima Mansoor
Diabetic foot disease is a common and preventable complication of diabetes, yet early signs are often missed because nerve damage can reduce pain sensation. As a result, injuries or infections may progress unnoticed until serious complications develop. This infographic was designed to raise awareness of the early warning signs of diabetic foot disease for both healthcare professionals and the public. It visually highlights symptoms such as numbness, colour change, cracks or callus formation, and swelling, alongside urgent red flags including ulceration, infection, blackened skin, and pain at rest. Preventative actions—daily foot checks, protective footwear, avoiding walking barefoot, and seeking medical help early—are also emphasised. By presenting these messages in a clear and accessible format, the infographic aims to encourage early recognition and prompt action, helping to reduce avoidable limb loss in people living with diabetes.

Diabetic foot is a silent yet largely preventable complication of diabetes, arising from the combined effects of peripheral neuropathy, foot deformity, and ischemia, which together lead to ulceration, infection, and a high risk of amputation. This educational infographic highlights the critical importance of early prevention and systematic care by emphasizing simple but essential steps: identifying high-risk patients (neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, prior ulceration), performing a structured foot examination at every visit (inspection of skin and pressure points, detection of callus or ulcer, pulse palpation, and sensory assessment), and initiating timely investigations when ischemia is suspected. It also underlines the need to optimize medical management through glycemic control, infection treatment, and effective off-loading strategies. Central to the message is that early recognition and prompt referral to a multidisciplinary team, including vascular specialists, can significantly reduce limb loss. Designed for both healthcare professionals and patients, this poster aims to raise awareness, promote proactive habits, and reinforce that consistent, simple interventions can transform outcomes, shifting diabetic foot from a leading cause of amputation to a preventable condition through vigilance, education, and early action.

Diabetic foot disease is a leading cause of lower-limb amputation worldwide, yet many patients present late because diabetic neuropathy masks the early warning signs — injuries go unnoticed until infection or tissue loss is advanced. This infographic targets both the public and healthcare professionals with a simple, memorable message: NO PAIN ≠ NO DANGER. A painless foot can still be a dying foot. The design uses the acronym STEPS to help viewers recognise and remember the five key warning signs to check for daily: Swelling or redness, Tingling or numbness, Exposed wound or odour, Pressure callus or cracks, and Skin darkening. Supporting panels explain why diabetes causes these silent complications and what patients should do when signs appear. The closing call to action, "Watch your STEPS — own your footprint," reinforces personal responsibility and encourages early presentation to prevent infection, surgery, or amputation.
